Bone Densitometry

Bone Densitometry, also known as DEXA, is a low-radiation X-ray technique used to measure bone density, providing crucial information on bone strength and the risk of fractures.

At Bendigo Radiology, our Bone Densitometry (DEXA) services offer a precise and critical assessment of bone health, essential for diagnosing conditions like osteoporosis and osteopenia.

This non-invasive procedure helps monitor bone density changes over time and evaluates how well treatments for bone loss are working, aiding in the proactive management of bone health.

During a Bone Densitometry test, you will be asked to lie flat on a padded table while a scanning arm passes over your body. This arm emits a small amount of X-ray energy, which is absorbed by the bones and soft tissues. Two energy peaks are recorded: one for soft tissue and one for bone, which allows the machine to differentiate between bone and soft tissue, giving a detailed image of bone density. The process is completely painless, and you won't feel anything other than the table beneath you.

HOW IT WORKS

Lying comfortably on your back, the DEXA machine passes over your body, using low-dose X-rays to differentiate between bone and soft tissue and precisely measure bone density.

How long will my appointment take?

A typical Bone Densitometry scan at Bendigo Radiology is quick and efficient, generally taking about 15 to 30 minutes from start to finish. This time includes preparation, the scan itself, and a brief post-scan discussion to ensure you understand the initial findings.

Our Bone Densitometry service is a fundamental part of our commitment to providing comprehensive diagnostic care. With the latest technology and expert radiologists, Bendigo Radiology ensures accurate results that help in the early detection and management of bone health issues.
