NucMed and PET/CT

Nuclear Medicine and PET/CT are advanced radiology subspecialties that use small amounts of radioactive material to create detailed images of the body's function and metabolism, aiding in the diagnosis and management of various diseases.

At Bendigo Radiology, our Nuclear Medicine and PET/CT services offer sophisticated diagnostic tools that provide vital information beyond what typical imaging techniques can achieve.

These modalities are crucial for detecting and evaluating a range of conditions, from bone and heart diseases to infections and cancers. By highlighting specific areas of the body with radioactive tracers, these scans can pinpoint functional abnormalities, offering insights into both anatomy and biochemical processes.

For both Nuclear Medicine and PET/CT scans, the procedure starts with the safe administration of a radioactive tracer, typically via injection. Depending on the type of scan, you may be asked to wait for a period (usually about an hour for PET) to allow the tracer to distribute throughout your body.

During the scan, you'll lie on a table that slides into a large scanner, which detects and converts the energy emitted by the tracer into three-dimensional images. This process is painless and non-invasive. For PET scans, specific preparations such as fasting and avoiding strenuous activity before the test are necessary to ensure accurate results.

We need a referral from your doctor to book your appointment.

HOW IT WORKS

After receiving a small amount of radioactive tracer, you'll relax as our scanners capture detailed images of how this tracer is processed by your body, highlighting areas of concern.

How long will my appointment take?

The total time required for a Nuclear Medicine or PET/CT scan can vary depending on the specific test and the body area being examined. Generally, you should plan for about 2 to 4 hours at our facility. This includes the time for tracer injection, necessary waiting periods for tracer absorption, and the actual scanning process. We ensure a comfortable environment throughout your stay, with our staff available to assist you at every step.

At Bendigo Radiology, we are committed to providing state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging that aids in the precise detection and treatment planning for various medical conditions, ensuring that you receive comprehensive care tailored to your health needs.
